Co-Curricular Information

We are aware that some of the most important educational experiences for our students come from opportunities offered and taken up outside of academic studies. To this end, the College offers a broad range of activities to students to promote the service ethic, to develop leadership skills, to foster artistic and cultural appreciation, and to encourage both recreation and competition through physical pursuits.

Arts and Culture

Extra-Curricular cultural activities offered:

School Band
Jazz Band
Drama Club
Rock Band
School Orchestra
Choirs and singing
Debating

Drama festivals
School Production
Kapa Haka
Regional cultural competitions
Manu Korero competition

Kapa Haka:

Students are always encouraged to join our growing Kapa Haka Roopu. We have competed in various Kapa Haka Hui and gained positive endorsements for our performances.
Maori students are also encouraged to participate in regional and national speaking Manu Korero involving selected impromptu topics in English and/or Maori.

Leadership and Service Opportunities

Developing leadership skills is another way Tararua College provides direction for the future. All students from Years 9 to13 are encouraged to participate and assume various leadership roles.
Some of the roles include:

Head boy and girl
Deputy head students
Board of Trustees student representative
House leaders and deputy leaders

Bus monitors
Peer support
School council
Sports captains
SADD

Young New Zealanders' Challenge:

This became well known as the Duke of Edinburgh Awards. It is a balanced, progressive programme of extra-curricular activities for young people between the ages of 14 and 25.

There are three levels to the Challenge Programme - Bronze, Silver and Gold.
Bronze: Minimum starting age 14 and over - minimum commitment of 6 months. Earliest finishing age 14 1/2.
Silver: Minimum starting age 15 and over - minimum commitment of 6 months (12 months for direct entrants*).
Gold: Minimum starting age 16 and over - minimum commitment of 12 months (18 months for direct entrants*).
(*direct entrant is a participant who has not completed the previous Award).

Each level has four Sections:
Service: To encourage service to others and bring about an awareness of community, the need for volunteering and a growth in self-esteem for each young person.
Expeditions: To encourage a spirit of adventure and discovery that develops decision making and teamwork skills and improves communication, risk management and planning skills.
Skills: To encourage the discovery and development of personal interests and social and practical skills that can lead to a lifelong interest and lifelong learning.
Physical Recreation: To encourage participation in physical activity and improvement of performance and an awareness of health and fitness.

The Programme Will Challenge The Individual!
It is for students of all abilities;
It is non-competitive;
Students set their own goals in each of the sections;
Gaining an Award requires persistence and commitment;
It is a means of accrediting learning through an internationally recognised Award.

A Success Story.
Since 1963 almost 60,000 young people in New Zealand have achieved Bronze, Silver or Gold Awards, while many more have completed one or more section certificates.
Approximately 5,000 young people take up the Programme each year.
Over 300 schools and colleges offer the Programme for their students.
A further 500 community groups offer their young people access to the Programme.
The Programme is internationally recognised and operated in over 100 countries worldwide.

Mrs K Parker-Corney is the Co-ordinator for this Award at the College

Sport And Recreation

We encourage all students to participate in the many sporting and recreational activities on offer. These co-curricular activities help develop strong relationships between students and with staff; they contribute towards school pride and an enjoyment of school; and they provide different learning experiences.
Many of our students have become inter-school, regional, island and national representatives. Their successes, along with those of the top school teams, are acknowledged through various prestigious awards, including the College's Blues Awards. The College Sports Coordinator is Miss Searle.

Houses:

On enrolment at Tararua College, students become members of one of the four sporting houses: Kowhai, Rimu, Totara or Matai. They remain with that house for their time at College. Inter-house sporting competitions are held at lunchtimes and there is fierce inter-house rivalry at the College athletic and swimming sports.

Outdoor Education:

In addition to being offered as a Curriculum subject for Year 12 students, there are various opportunities for students to experience education outside the classroom through the Year 9 overnight camps, Year 9 and 10 electives at the end of the year, and a variety of Curriculum subject field trips.
The teacher in charge of Outdoor Education at the College is Mr. C. Leigh
