GATEWAY at Tararua College offers students an opportunity to explore the career they are interested in. Most students who are on the University Pathway are excluded, as a day out of school could be too disruptive. These students are advised to seek work/career experience during school holidays.

Through a work placement, supported by weekly tasks, students are finding out about the business; qualifications needed; opportunities of employment, and the pros and cons in this line of work.

Furthermore, students learn about how attitudes become visible in (interpersonal) behaviour. Students observe behaviours in the workplace and relate these back to their own attitudes, strengths and weaknesses.

After each weekly task students reflect with their Gateway teacher on the learning that took place. 

The GATEWAY programme at Tararua College allows students to develop greater self-awareness. Students’ personal strengths and weaknesses can be evaluated against what is important for them in life. 

To be considered for a GATEWAY placement, students must have excellent school attendance and a clear career goal.
