COLLEGE FACILITIES AND SERVICES Tararua College provides an environment which enables students to achieve personal standards
of excellence and to reach their full potential. Isobel Checkley Library
Our primary objective is to encourage reading in an environment that supports the school's teaching and learning programmes. Students can access resources for their recreation reading interests and are provided with the opportunities to develop information skills using a wide range of resources, including information technology.
Student participation in the Library is encouraged through an active committee of student librarians who participate in the daily running of the library. Kelly Beech Rural Education Unit A 10 hectare property, which includes learning space, woolshed and yards, situated next to the school grounds. It is used for various learning programmes, including rural studies, science and mathematics. |
Computing Facilities The school has an excellent network of up-to-date computers with broadband access to the internet. These computers are used by students for word-processing, research and specific computer courses. For example, a range of specialist software applications are used in design work. Careers information is also available through this system. Staff too use this system: To record student performance for reporting purposes, as a research facility, and it enables them to send/receive e-mail both at school and at home. Tararua College belongs to a 'cluster' of Wairarapa schools which jointly receive funding to enhance e-learning opportunities for their students. Performing Arts Complex Completed in 2005, this includes a purpose-built drama suite, and a music suite with a large music room and a number of smaller practice studios. Music tuition is provided for string, woodwind, guitar, brass and percussion instruments. Technology Complex A near new 3 million dollar building with state-of-the-art facilities, including purpose built rooms and workshops for: Computing Visual Art (with photographic dark room and computer suite) Food and Textiles Technology Materials Technology (with comprehensive machine shop) Graphics Gymnasium Complex The College has a gymnasium with excellent facilities for physical education and a range of indoor sports. This complex also includes a covered swimming pool with convection heating. Whare Wananga This stand-alone building is the Maori cultural centre of the College and the home of a strong Kapa Haka group. Grounds The grounds include tennis/netball courts, rugby/soccer/ hockey fields, cricket pitches/training nets, and track and field facilities all within an attractive well-kept, park-like environment. Canteen This is open to students at interval and lunchtimes, and is stocked with an excellent range of healthy food. Personal Property All property should be clearly and permanently marked with the student's name. Valuables or money can be handed in to the College office for safe keeping. Student lockers are available at a cost of $30 per year (plus a $10 refundable key deposit). Cell phones are not to be brought to the College. ![]() |
