Whether students wish to become effective practitioners/performers, develop literacy in the Arts so as to become appreciative members of an audience, or use their acquired skills and knowledge to gain entry to tertiary level Arts courses, the College provides a comprehensive Arts programme in 4 disciplines: Music: The Tararua College Music Department is a hive of industry. Over 120 students learn a musical instrument through our in-school tuition programme. Our tutors are of a very high standard enabling us to offer a wide range of choice: Tuition in 13 instruments, from drums to piccolo, is available. The College has both concert and stage bands who play at school and community occasions. There are a number of rock bands, some of who enter into national competitions. We offer vocal tuition and the opportunity to join one of our choirs. Visual Art: This is a popular choice at the college, with 160 students each year learning at Year 9 through to Year 13. In senior classes, students specialise in Painting, Photography or Design. Other disciplines are taught where demand is evidenced. The Department was granted state-of-the-art technology with the latest sound and lighting equipment on the market today. With this equipment came the rigging needed to hold the lighting equipment and speakers. Along with a large wardrobe, rehearsal room, mobile staging and large teaching space, the Suite has a well-resourced lighting den. This lighting room stores a selection of spotlights, fresnel lighting, pendant lighting, a sound desk and lighting board. Students learn to use this equipment for productions and assessments. Though the Drama Suite is used primarily as a teaching space, it doubles as a mini theatre. Here students can develop their skills in the technical roles of theatre as well as performance. The Department has equipment that has already catered for three stage productions, a fashion parade and a College ball. Senior Drama is very strong within the College, with students achieving in both performance and technical NCEA Achievement Standards. Students experience a variety of Drama forms and technologies such as make-up, lighting, improvisation, clowning and mask. Drama at Tararua College takes a process-based approach where students learn to develop their ideas in group situations. Drama as an extra-curricular activity is also thriving with a variety of performances and trips to theatres in the area. Kapa Haka: Languages

Tararua College is one of four schools involved in the trial, with the two other schools in the Hawkes Bay and one in Wellington. All these schools have had the assistance of Food Technologist, Carol Pound. The year at Tararua College began with the students forming business groups to create their Young Enterprise Company followed by the allocation of directorship positions to each company member. A trip to Wellington was then undertaken to visit the Wishbone factory to gather information about the Wishbone Company and be given a brief. Following this visit the students completed market and consumer research based on the brief. Consumer research was completed by travelling to Wellington again to carry out surveying of Wishbone consumers. This helped the students develop an idea about the type of products the consumers purchase and what new products they would like to be able to buy from Wishbone stores. A variety of tasks were then completed to allow each student to develop their own product. Each product was then taken, as samples, to the Wellington Food Show and the students proceeded to survey attendees of the Food Show about their products. Each business group presented to Wishbone and received feedback from them about their products. They were given suggestions about what they can do to develop their product. A final presentation to Wishbone will occur in Term 4, with the goal being to have Wishbone purchase one of the product recipes off a student. ![]() Now that the students' Technology practice has been briefly explained, you are probably thinking where is the business practice?!? Well, a number of the actions they have carried out for Technology have cross-credited towards the Young Enterprise Scheme course completion requirements. Other tasks have also been completed such as; holding business meetings, writing a business plan, managing finances and producing and selling their selected company products at the Trade Fair in the Plaza, Palmerston North. The final tasks for each business group are to write an annual report and wind up their company. This trial has been successful in proving that Technology and business can fit together to provide students with real life experiences in these areas. Students who complete this programme have the opportunity to gain credits in Level 2 or Level 3 Food Technology achievement standards and ten Level 3 credits from the Young Enterprise Scheme course completion.
