Tararua College Happenings, Week 10, Term 3, 2009 Profile of the week This week we profile Year 12 student AJ Howse. AJ is fully involved with school sports teams, and has already achieved his Level 2 National Certificate in Computing this year. He is well respected by staff and students and is a very good role model for his peers.
Name: AJ Howse Class/House: 12 RD/Kowhai Home Town: Woodville Favourite Subjects: Computing and PE Sports and Hobbies: Basketball, athletics and cross country Aspirations: Possibly to join the army or go on to university The last week of term was action-packed. Spring Fever Week was in full swing with many activities on offer. The social on Wednesday was well attended and a very enjoyable event. The annual junior Kapa Haka Competition was held on Monday and there were some magnificent performances, with the combined group from 9PK and 9 MN taking out first place. The most anticipated Social Studies event of the year occurred during period 5 on Tuesday 22 September. Four Year 9 classes and four Year 10 classes were represented by teams at the annual Junior Social Studies Current Events Quiz. The questions were tough and tested students' knowledge of the top global and national news events of 2009. All teams were outstanding and showed their competitive nature as the Quiz progressed. First equal winners with 57 points were 10MI (Braden Davenport, Ruka Braddick, Liam Cooper and Kathryn Pound) and 9WI (Sam Arends, Hannah Field, Brianna Kelleher and Georgia Mayer). Coming in third was 9PK with 51 points (Conor Davey, Caitlin Simpson, Simon Barnes and Danielle Pierry). Unfortunately the Staff team was unable to sustain its winning performance, having won the last three Quiz events. However, mention of the amazing sole performance by star teacher Mr Ngatuere for the Staff team must not go amiss. Social Studies HOD Kerry Forrest did a magnificent job organising the Quiz and is thanked for his effort and the fun afternoon.

On Wednesday, a group of senior textile students journeyed down to Wellington to attend the dress rehearsals for the World of Wearable Art show. Also on Wednesday, our Kapa Haka roupu gave a rousing performance at the local Kohanga Reo. The previous weekend was also a very busy one with many College activities taking place. On Friday the annual Lip Sync Competition was held in the College hall and was a great success. A terrific crowd attended and really enjoyed the slick performances, and the group Queen took out the honours. Winners for the night were Queen performing Bohemian Rhapsody, made up of Year 11 students David Harvey, James Baker, Stephany Walker and Jemma Lochhead The Aivale Cole Concert on Sunday was also well attended and thoroughly enjoyed by all. A group of students travelled to Christchurch to work at the Hip Hop Nationals competition. Here is a report from teacher-in-charge Mrs Mary Mika. "Waking up at 1am to pack a bag for Christchurch required the most motivation. However, the lack of sleep was not an issue once the trip was underway. Nine students flew down to the deep South on Saturday 19 September. They had been invited to work behind the scenes at the NZCAF Secondary Schools Aerobics and Hip Hop Nationals, held at Ngaio Marsh Theatre, Canterbury University. A grueling day of work awaited them, as all students were kept busy from 8am until 3pm with few breaks. They were rewarded with free passes to watch the heats for Hip Hop. The overall experience was very valuable for our students. They not only learned about some 'behind the scenes' organisation for a big event, but they also had the opportunity to see the level that they need to perform at to make it to a national hip hop competition. The trip finished with an easy flight home the next day. It was an exhausting, but exciting, weekend that the students won't forget. A huge thank you to Alana Flintoff for her much appreciated assistance, great humour and great company."
