Tararua College Happenings, Week 1, Term 2, 2010

The new term was in full swing very quickly last week. The Jubilee is over, organizers are now tying up loose ends.
The major event last week outside the classroom was the annual school Cross Country event held on Wednesday.
Planning was well under way for the upcoming Tertiary Career Discovery day trip and the annual Year 12 Geography Waitomo trip. Winter sports teams were practicing hard in preparation for their first competition games this weekend, with the exception of the Girls' Hockey team, who had their first game last week.

The 50th Jubilee celebrations held over the Easter weekend were a great success, with over seven hundred registered attendees from far and wide converging on the College. Many registrations were from the 1960's era and many old friendships were rekindled over the weekend. Both the Friday and Saturday night events were very well attended by around five hundred attending each night.

The weather was kind, and Saturday was photograph day at the College; time to look at the many and various displays set up in and around the school.

The Sunday church service in the school hall was also well attended, and tree planting ceremonies took place on Sunday by groups such as past principals, Board of Trustees members and foundation pupils.

Copies of the Jubilee book and souvenirs are still available and can be purchased through the College office.

A fantastic weekend, enjoyed by all who attended.

Over the Easter break our 1st XV Rugby team took part in their annual Jack Porter Trophy Tournament held this year in Stratford. Participating schools were Stratford High School, Waiopehu College, Central Hawkes Bay College and Tararua. Our team performed well in a very evenly contested tournament. Congratulations to our three players, Jackson Clince, Hemi Whatuira and Brett Richards on making the tournament team.

Last week saw the commencement of the Gateway work experience placements for about a dozen of our senior students. These placements allow the students to work in their preferred career area for one day a week and to experience a "working life". Students are involved in local businesses, schools and farms covering hotel catering, plumbing, golf green-keeping, farming, early childhood and primary teaching.

The Cross country was held last Wednesday in cool and overcast conditions. The whole school took part and the Senior Boys had to complete two laps of the 3 kilometer course with John Beech taking out the honours in this division.
