The second week of term was a busy one. On Wednesday students, teachers and parents of Kumeroa/Hopelands School visited the Marae at Tararua College. This report is written by Year 8 students Kaya Karena and Sonia Howlett:
"We were met by Warren Chase, who told us what to do and explained the traditions associated with the powhiri (being greeted on to the marae). Then the calling began. Kaya Karena and Sonia Howlett karanga (called) for Kumeroa Hopelands School. Once we had taken off our shoes, we were greeted by a fearsome haka, performed by the Tararua College Kapa Haka Group. When they had finished, there were speeches. Joseph Smith and Gareth Cannon spoke for Kumeroa Hopelands School. After every speech there was a waiata (song); we sang 'E toru na mea'. Then we sat down to learn all about the marae!"

Senior Art students headed over to visit Te Manawa in Palmerston North on Thursday. They were to attend a workshop given by the NZ Army artist.

The Year 12 Geography class returned from a very successful visit to the Waitomo Caves region. A tour of the main caves, looking at their Geographical features, black water rafting and caving (including the much talked about 'squeeze') were completed without incident.

The Rural Studies class was still in the Central Otago area and having to brave cold and wet conditions.

Two student plays were entered in the Youth Section of the Theatre in the Bush's One Act Play Festival held recently at the Regent Downstairs Theatre. 'What Room was That Again?' was performed by a cast of ten Year 10 students, followed by a group of senior pupils who performed 'Bang! Bang! You're Dead'. Both troupes overcame their nerves and did extremely well in front of a large, supportive audience. Sam Keall was awarded Most Promising Actor and Nicola Death was runner-up in this category. Special thanks must go to Drama teacher, Susanne Richardson, who has been a very busy woman directing both plays, and also appearing as Cinderella in a staff entry the following night.
This year the Primary Technology Department at Tararua College is offering their client schools the opportunity to select some students who would benefit from a Technology Enrichment Programme based on CREST Awards. CREST (Creativity in Science and Technology) is a national programme that encourages children to use creativity, to persevere, apply knowledge and communicate effectively in their quest to solve a real life problem.

In term one students from Pongaroa and Ballance Schools took part in the Programme, which was based on the theme 'Helping the Elderly'. Students visited Waireka Home, where the manager Wendy Newman spoke to them about the needs of the elderly. They were then taken on a tour of the facility to see the equipment in use. The visit acted as a stimulus for the students to design their own aid for an elderly person who they had identified with a specific need.

All students are to be congratulated on successfully completing their first CREST Awards and are very worthy recipients of their certificates and badges.
