Tararua College Happenings, Week 2, Term 2, 2010 At the Anzac Day Dawn Service in Pahiatua the College was well represented including the Head Girl, Kate Steminger, and the Head Boy, Luke Parker. They laid a commemorative wreath on behalf of the College and then, along with Miss de Castro, took part in the parade. In the preceding week, the full school assembly was addressed by Mr. D Ngatuere on the significance of Anzac day and the associated commemorative services that are held. Also, at the assembly, members of 9PH read out some of the war poems. They had written these after working in class on a 'Crisis' unit, focusing on the Anzac Gallipoli invasion in World War 1. Jessica Webb's poem entitled 'Hell on Earth' is published below: Death it is near I can feel it My life grows shorter every step I take closer to the enemy It is cold and wet but I am not alone in this horrid place, my Australian and other New Zealand friends are with me Then I hear shooting - we were spotted. I hide behind a tree. I see my friends fall dead in front of me. I see their spirit leave their eyes. Tears fall down my face like the rain. Not many of us are left. I think of my family and what they will do if I don't make it back. Though it seems hell here, I am honoured to serve my country and make up for what we have lost ![]() Anzac poet, Year 9 student Jessica Webb The Year 12 Geography trip to the Waitomo Caves region returned last Wednesday. Highlights of the trip were the caving in Gardner's Gut, including the much talked about 'Squeeze', and the black-water rafting experience. The group was very enthusiastic and full of team spirit which led to a very successful trip. ![]() About to go underground: One of our black-water rafting groups about to depart |
![]() Anna Biddle catching some action On Wednesday, a large number of our senior students were shuttled to Barber Hall in Palmerston North to attend the 'Tertiary Discovery Day'. The Day was designed for students to explore future career paths, and was organized by UCOL, Massey University, Study Link and Career Pathways. Our students found the day very worthwhile, and made the most of looking at the careers on offer. While most sports codes are yet to have their first competition game, our hockey teams had their first grading games last week, with both teams showing some positive signs. The Boys drew 3-all with a PNBHS team and the Girls had a very strong second half in their clash with Freyberg HS. Basketball teams have also had grading games in their competition. We are looking forward to a new inter-House competition this week, when teams from each House are to compete in an 'Art Challenge', involving chalk drawings in the quadrangle. The regional Stage Challenge competition is fast approaching on May 21st. Our large team is making great progress, with all of the sets completed and dance routines nearly finalized. This is a huge undertaking and we wish our team well in the competition.
