Tararua College Happenings, Week 2, Term 3, 2009

Last week saw the public announcement of the Proposals for Consultation by the Bush Education Plan Working Group. These are only proposals, albeit far-reaching, and are out for public consultation with submissions closing on August 17th. Feelings in the local school communities are running high and action plans regarding submissions are in place to fight for their school's identity and survival in their rural communities. The education and welfare of the children is the first concern of the community, and hopefully sensible outcomes can be reached at the end of this consultation process for the final proposal from the Working Group, but the ultimate decisions rest with the Minister of Education.

The second week of term was another busy one. The senior Speech competition was held in the Library on Thursday evening. There were sixteen very high quality speeches presented, with topics ranging from Family Outings to Individuality.

On Wednesday the whole school were treated to a performance by well-known international musician Paul Ubana Jones. His musical ability was impressive and his performance was thoroughly enjoyed by our students. He also held a workshop in the afternoon. This concentrated on song writing and surviving in the music industry. Our students were enthralled and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Tararua College has been involved with the Manawatu Branch of the NZDA in protecting the blue duck in the Orua River catchment area. This initiative started in 2008 when they, through Mr Leigh and the Year 12 Building and Construction class, began making the traps for the project. In the last year we have made 300 traps for the trap line extending from Heritage Lodge to Triangle Hut in the Ruahines, netting 32 stoats, 122 rats and 1 mouse and have been involved with checking the trap line on three occasions. Another College group is scheduled to check the line in mid-August. Traps are available for purchase by contacting Mr Leigh through the College office.

Winter sports resumed last weekend with some very good results. Girls' Football recorded a 1 - all draw with JFL Women's from Palmerston North, and a 2 - 0 victory over a Dannevirke Women's Team. Boys' Football had a 4 - 1 loss to Awatapu First X1, while Boys' Hockey Firsts had a sound 3 - 1 win against PNBHS. Boys' Rugby had two close losses in the First XV and U14 teams, while the U15 had a very strong 29 - 5 win over PNBHS, and are now in the semi-final round for their competition. Our Senior A Netballers disposed of Feilding A2 27 - 23, and 9A Netball easily beat Freyberg 22 - 10.
