Tararua College Happenings, Week 2, Term 4, 2008
Senior school exams have now been completed and students will be getting their results back this week. It doesn't leave much time before the final external NCEA exams begin on November 17th. There is plenty to do before this time, including Senior Reports and Senior Prize giving on Wednesday November 12th beginning at 7.00pm in the School hall. During Exam week the Year 11 Art students have been putting together their end of year folio. This is a huge task and the students have been all working really positively to have these completed and sent off to Wellington for assessment. Head of Art, Lisa Purda, is really pleased at the high standard of material in the student folios this year. Also during Exam week the National Inter-School Ag. Competition finals were held at Otiwhiti Station near Hunterville. There were 8 teams in the finals day, with Tararua being the only school to have two teams eligible for this event. They were accompanied on the day by Brian Ussher and he reports that our teams represented the school admirably. Amongst some tough competition they finished in 4th and 7th place respectively. Well done to the team members. In the first week of term a number of important events occurred. The first was Shakespeare Day for Year 13 English students on Thursday 17th October. Shakespeare Day is used as a final revision day for students before their Level 3 exams. This year, Miss Richardson's class focused on Richard III. Miss Sheridan's class focused on Othello in their workshops. The two classes dressed up in Elizabethan attire and enjoyed mask, drama, music and dance workshops. They composed their own songs, scripted their own dramatic performances, created masks and choreographed their own dances. These were followed by a parade through the School, a banquet lunch and then the performance competition of the afternoon. Thank you to the English, Drama and Music Departments for making the day a success!! On the Friday the annual Mangaramarama road race was held. This year the course had to be altered as runners are not permitted to run on SH2, so the course was tougher as runners ran over the Tiraumea Hill, along Mangaramarama Road and then about 600m down Makuri Road, before having to turn around and make the return trip back over the hill. A good field participated with the winner being Michael McKnight (Year 11), in a time of 42 minutes. He was three minutes clear of second place runner Elyse Jensen (Year 10). A fine effort from all runners. Daniel Collins of Year 13 has been awarded a Massey University High Achiever Scholarship for 2009. He intends to study Social Sciences at Massey. This is a very prestigious award and our congratulations go out to Daniel on his achievement. The following 14 students gained Credit passes in the recent University of New South Wales International English Competition: Lewis Chapman, Amy Blackwell, Lauren Nyhan, Sam Cotter-Dephoff, Caron Purvis, Samuel Keall, Jason Carr, Anna Biddle, Andrew Galloway, Anna Arends, Kathryn Pound, Cayde Mackail, Rennie de Jong and Braden Davenport. Well done to them all. For further information on this column or about Tararua College events please email amcknight@tararuacollege.school.nz |
