Tararua College Happenings, Week 3, Term 1, 2010

The year began with a Powhiri for all Year 9 and new students and staff to the College. The welcome took place in the hall and it was a very moving and fulfilling experience for our School community. Also in the first week of school, our Year 13 Geography class left on their annual trip around the central North Island, the highlight being the Tongariro Crossing traverse. The trip went very well, and Mr Forrest is looking forward to his year's Geography class with them.

The School grounds have been a hive of activity throughout the summer break. One of the original Nelson blocks was refurbished inside, had windows replaced, and now looks very smart. Also the entire backbone and switching gear on our computer network was brought up to speed, which was a major undertaking. It was not until the second week of school that we had full use of all of the classrooms again allowing students to follow their normal timetables and rooms.

The second week saw the all in athletics day taking place on Tuesday. The message of the day was participation with all of the School taking part and house spirit was certainly to the fore. Athletics Finals Day is being held this week, weather permitting. On Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, our swimming championships were held. Again there was a huge participation in events. Stand-out swimmers and record-breakers were Year 11 students Kathryn Pound and Ben Blackwell.

At the beginning of last week we welcomed a large group of students and teachers from Taisei Secondary School in Japan to Tararua College. During their four-week stay they will experience a variety of activities, and of course improve their English language skills.

Last week a group of our senior students spent the week at UCOL in Palmerston North attending a welding course and learning some very valuable skills. Also last Friday our Year 11 Biology class travelled to the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary for the day to experience the outdoors, looking at New Zealand conservation and exploring biological communities.

Tararua College Year 9 Parent-Teacher Evening Tararua College warmly welcomes our Year 9 students and their families to our school. There will be a Year 9 Parent/Teacher Evening and barbeque on Thursday 25 February at 7.00pm in the Library where staff can discuss the Year 9 programme for 2010, and have the opportunity to meet face to face with caregivers to discuss their children's progress to date.

Easter and our 50th Jubilee will soon be upon us. Interest is very high and it promises to be a very memorable weekend. For further information on this column or about Tararua College events, including our 50th Jubilee in Easter 2010, please contact the School office, email Mr. Mcknight at the College.
