Tararua College Happenings, Week 3, Term 2, 2009
Ivy Mary Gleeson has been running the Uniform Shop at Tararua College for the last eight years. The shop started in a small room off the Hall stage and then relocated to a bigger area in B block. Proceeds from the Uniform Shop have gone back into the School in the shape of picnic tables, a portable phone for the SSC, flowering plants and various trees, a water filter, blazers for students representing the College, umbrellas and seating around trees. Val Wallace has taken over running the Uniform Shop with help from Pat Connor. ![]() Ivy Mary Gleeson is farewelled after eight years in charge of the Tararua College Uniform Shop |
The return of trips from the central North Island and the South Island has seen things take on some normality in the third week of term. The Rural Studies trip looked at fine wool production and processing in the Canterbury region. At the PGG Wrightson wool store in Christchurch students were able to handle the most expensive wool in the world - part of the 100 kg bale of 12 micron super fine Merino wool. Students enjoyed the trip and took the opportunity to gain the experiences they may not normally be able to. On Wednesday the School was entertained in assembly by the band 5150, performing two of their own compositions. One of our three entries in this year's regional Smoke Free Rock Quest competition being held in Masterton Town Hall on Friday June 12th at 7pm, the group of Year 11 students formed the band at the beginning of this year. ![]() Year 11 students of 5150 (from left) Sam Keall lead guitar, Andrew Cornford on the Drums, James Baker vocals and guitar and Sam Cotter-Dephoff bass guitar Tararua College had an excellent representation at the Tararua Infracon Sports Person 2009 held in Dannevirke recently. Three students were nominated for the Junior Sportsperson Award: Kathryn Pound for swimming, Michael McKnight for football and Brayden Stephens for motocross. The Boy's Hockey First X1 won the prestigious Team Award, and the Coaches Award was taken out by Andrew Rankin and Mike Rivers as the coaches of last years Rugby First XV. The Sportsperson of the Year 2009 Award was won by former student Maia Tua-Davidson as a member of the New Zealand Women's Rugby League Team. Winter sports are well under way. The Boy's Football team had their first game in the Secondary Division 1 competition and had a fine win 5 - 3 against Feilding High School First X1. Goals were scored by Michael McKnight (3), Ben Cotter-Dephoff and Adam Chard. Boys Hockey had their first competition game last Thursday and Netball had their grading games last Saturday.
