Tararua College Happenings, Week 3, Term 2, 2010

Last week was a designated week for students to all be in school and so there were no outside trips in school time. While there are many interruptions to the school teaching programme throughout the year that are of course very valuable and worth while, it is always good from the teaching and learning perspective to have such a time as this week to concentrate fully on the classroom.

Since January, students who are going on the Italy trip, together with parents and supporters, have been working during the week and weekends to renovate the 'Italy House' at 19 Arthur Street, Pahiatua. The property has been redecorated inside and out, a new kitchen fitted, an upgraded bathroom as well as some interior work done on replacing walls and ceilings. Complete with a new driveway, courtesy of Infracon, and garden, thanks to KJ Mitre 10, the house is now for sale. It is listed with Tammy at our local Property Brokers agency, who are very supportive of our venture. The group is very proud of their work, and all profits are going toward the trip. The group has also published an 'Inspiration Cookbook' full of recipes, quotes and students' art work. This is available through the College office for $15.

A number of our current students have been nominated in the Junior Sportsperson of the Year category in the upcoming Infracon Tararua Sportsperson of the Year 2010 Awards. They are:
Simon McCool: Hockey and Running
Scott Sowry: Motor-Cross
Ben McLean: Golf
Alyse Jensen: Athletics and Running
Rebekah O'Hagan: Athletics
Kathryn Pound: Swimming
Jackson Clince: Rugby.
Congratulations to all of these nominees and we wish them well for the Awards, which are to be held on Friday May 21st.

Congratulations also go to Year 11 student Levi Kelly, who has won a 10 day cruise on the sailing ship 'Spirit of Adventure'. Levi won a nationwide essay competition held by Gasoline Alley Services. He was presented with his voucher for the trip at a lunchtime ceremony at the Eketahuna g.a.s. outlet recently.

Winter sports were under way last week with both competition and grading games in the various codes. Basketball is still in the grading process, with both Girls' and Boys' teams having mixed success. All netball teams were under way last weekend, with some solid displays coming from our senior teams. Boys Hockey had a very pleasing 3 - 1 win over St Peters College 1st X1 the previous week, and all hockey games were put off last week due to the National U12 Tournament being held in Palmerston North. Highlight of the rugby weekend was a resounding 31 - 5 win over Feilding High School for our U15 team.
