Tararua College Happenings, Week 3, Term 3, 2008

Winter sports were in full swing on the first weekend of the school term.
Our netball teams had a winning weekend with the Senior A team beating Awatapu Senior A by 23 - 19, Senior B beat Nga Tawa C by 26 - 17 and 9 A beat St Peters Junior A3 by 31 - 19. We are grateful to two of our ex students, Christa Bennetts and Josie Griffin for offering to coach the Senior A and B teams. They are doing a great job with the girls.
The Senior A team is off to the Lower Inter Secondary Schools Netball tournament in Palmerston North from 1st - 5th September.

Boys' First X1 Football won their semifinal knockout game against Levin 6 - 1 and leads their competition division, and our Girls' Football team drew with competition leaders Feilding.

Boys' First X1 Hockey drew 1 - 1 against Feilding.

Our three Boys' rugby teams all had good wins and the Girls' Rugby had a solid game against Feilding High, the current lower North Island Champions.

A big thank you to all community and staff coaches who make all our sports activities tick, and also thanks to all the support our teams receive on match days and to local businesses that sponsor some of our teams.

In the recent July holiday the 1st XV had a very enjoyable trip to the Gold Coast. Planning for this long awaited trip began at the end of the rugby season last year, meetings were held and a group of parents was formed to guide the boys fundraising efforts. This trip could not have happened without the efforts of this group and the fundraising opportunities that were organised. The touring group all greatly appreciates the time and effort of Ken, Dub, Barb, Ann and all the others who made the trip possible.
Two games of rugby were played against top teams from the under 18 competition, which meant that our 14 to 17 year-olds were up against players who have now mostly turned 19. Both teams were given a good fright, although we did not win either game in the end, the coaches and parents were very impressed by some of the best rugby they had seen.

No trip to the Gold Coast would be complete without theme parks and three fantastic days were spent at Seaworld, Movieworld and Dreamworld. No rollercoaster remained un-coasted and no death defying drop remained un-dropped. The bargain shopping was also a highlight and several visits were made to some of the enormous shopping complexes, with some very cunning deals achieved. In our spare time we practiced rugby. Having travelled all night to get there and travelling all night to get home the number of experiences packed into eight days was phenomenal.
On behalf of all the boys, thanks to all the people who made this trip possible.

As part of their school programme, Lydia Greenwood and Johnny Te Ohaere (both Year 13) organized a 2 day trip to Hawkes Bay to visit the local attractions for 3 of our Japanese exchange students.
Masanari commented "I saw a kiwi! It was awesome."
Haruka said "I enjoyed soaking in the hot pools with the bubbling."
Asami said "My ears were really sore and my legs were tingling with the cold."
An enjoyable time was had by students and staff. Thank you Lydia and Johnny.
