Tararua College Happenings, Week 3, Term 4, 2008

The time until NCEA exams for our seniors is quickly disappearing. Senior prizegiving is almost here and preparations are well under way for this show piece event on Wednesday November 12th at 7.00 pm in the School hall.

Also well under way are the preparations for our junior's elective week from December 1st - 7th . Activities this year are as varied as ever and staff and students are looking forward to this week. Students are given the opportunity to display their skills and leadership in a different form during electives, and participate in activities that otherwise they may not have the opportunity to.

During Term 3, for one afternoon each week, 15 Year 10 students have worked with small groups of Pahiatua primary students, taking them for electives. These varied from teaching guitar, computing skills such as web design, basketball, chess and draughts, drama, singing, and badminton. The groups of primary students were from years 5 - 8. It has been an excellent opportunity for our students to be teachers and leaders, and one that they have enjoyed.

Art folios for the seniors students have been the focus this term. Year 11 have completed theirs, and parents and caregivers have had the opportunity to see some of the finished products. Year 12 and 13 are currently working on theirs, and there are some stunning collections being assembled. The senior Textile students are also putting the final touches to their memorable creations.

Dylan Field was recently presented a Credit Certificate for his participation in the University of Auckland Economics Competition, placing him in the top 30% of students who took part.

The cricket season began last Thursday, with two girls' teams entered in the Palmerston North indoor competition this term. The concept of playing indoors began last year to ensure that everyone got a game, as the weather can be changeable at this time of year. It proved extremely popular and all of the players from last year have returned for another season. Both teams played teams from Nga Tawa with mixed results. The 'A' side restricted them to 64 before piling on 138 runs in response. Grace Martin and Nicky Schrader batted brilliantly in their partnership, scoring 46 in their four overs. The 'B' side played the stronger Nga Tawa side and played well, eventually losing by just 26 runs. The season continues for the next three weeks.
