Tararua College Happenings, Week 4, Term 1, 2010 Head Girl and Head Boy for 2010 are Year 13 students Kate Steminger and Luke Parker. Both are long-serving members of the School Council, and are looking forward to the challenges and responsibilities that their leadership positions will offer.
2010 Head Girl Kate Steminger and Head Boy Luke ParkerFollowing the retirement of long serving local primary teacher Jacqui Neilson from her position in the Primary Technology Centre, we welcome to Tararua College Carly Bird, from Wellington, who is working in the primary technology area. Also, late last year, Drama and English teacher Suzanne Richardson accepted a teaching position at Chanel College in Masterton. Her replacement is Emily Look who taught part-time in the Social Studies Department in 2009, and is now full-time teaching English and Drama. Emily and her family have been living in the district for the last two years, since shifting here from the Coromandel area. ![]() New Staff for 2010: Emily Look (left) and Carly Bird Last Friday, the Year 11 Biology class travelled to the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary to undertake a comparative stream study. They got to observe tuatara in an outdoor enclosure, learned some medicinal benefits of plants and some of the group were also dive-bombed by a kaka. It was a superb day, and students gained invaluable knowledge from the trip. This Friday, our Year 9 students are being sponsored by our local Westpac Branch to do a riverbank clean-up supporting our environmental goals. |
Last Tuesday saw the completion of the School athletics championships with Finals Day. It was a brilliant day in all respects, and athletes performed particularly well. A long-standing record of forty-one years was broken by Dylan Bennett in the Senior Boy's long jump, with the new mark set at 6.58m, breaking the old record by 11cm. Maxx Honey also broke the Intermediate Boys' high jump record, which had stood for twenty years. It was also pleasing to see some Taisei College students from Japan taking part in some events on Athletics Day. From these championships a group of fifty athletes will represent Tararua at the up-coming Wairarapa Inter Secondary Schools Athletics Day to be held this Wednesday in Masterton. The start of the Intermediate Girls' 4 x 100 relay, and competition is hot Fifty-eight students from Taisei Junior High School are visiting Tararua College from Ichinomiya, near Nagoya, in Japan. The students are studying English in a programme run by Masters College teachers, using Tararua College facilities. The course includes English classes in the morning in Tararua College classrooms, activities (usually relating to their study) in the afternoon, and lots of talking with their host family in the evening. The students also record their day by writing a diary in English. The Japanese group this year are very keen to integrate well with Tararua College students, and we have seen some good friendships developing between the young people from the two nations. Tararua College students have been surprised at how competitive the Taisei Junior High students are when they are playing games with each other, during lunch-times and morning break. Special thanks must go to the host families. Without people in the community stepping forward with the offer to host, the programme could not work. A group of Taisei and Tararua students in a PE lesson As you are aware the College 50th Jubilee is to be held at Easter on April 2nd - 4th. If you are able to billet any people attending the Jubilee, could you please ring the College on 376 8344 and leave your details. Easter and our 50th Jubilee will soon be upon us.
