Tararua College Happenings, Week 4, Term 3, 2008
The rain continues but the show carries on. Another big weekend of sport, with some huge results. Girls rugby defeated Kuranui College by 50 points in a rather wet and cold game last Sunday. Boys football easily beat Awatapu Yellow 8 - 0, and the First XV Rugby team had a 63 - 12 win over Hato Paora. In netball, our 10A team had a well deserved win over one of the top teams, Rangitikei Junior As by 18 - 17. The Girls First X1 Hockey team would like to thank Bush Park Trust for their financial assistance towards their new uniforms. Other sponsors include B J Dickson Building, Eketahuna Engineering, Rowden Contractors, Shannon Spreading and Corlett Contracting. The uniforms were primarily designed by team captain Sara Eagle, Year 13. The girls look great and have enjoyed a good season so far, and their latest result was a mid week victory against Nga Tawa 2 - 1. They are looking forward to attending the Secondary School National Tournament in Hamilton in September. Last Tuesday Tom Tylee, Chloe Schrader and Grace Martin attended a Wairarapa REAP leadership course in Masterton. They spoke to the group of Year 8 students about leadership skills and attributes and how they could all become effective leaders when they go to secondary school. The College chess team attended a tournament in Palmerston North last Wednesday and finished a creditable 5th against 12 schools, which included the 3 top teams in the North Island. Some Year 9 students have been busy in their science classes constructing entries for the Air New Zealand 'Make it Fly' competition, while Year 10s have been successfully launching their own hot air balloons from the school field. Tararua College sent a group of senior students to the Massey University and UCOL open day last week on 6th August in Palmerston North. Students found this day very helpful to experience first hand what is available at our local tertiary institutions. The Rural Studies field trip this year was based on dairy farming, from the cowshed to the consumer. The journey from Pahiatua to Hamilton via Napier was spent looking at a variety of aspects of dairy production, including robotic cow milking. Thursday was spent at the Mystery Creek Field Days. The first meeting of the 2010 Jubilee Committee was held recently. The celebrations are to be held at Labour weekend 2010.
