Tararua College Happenings, Week 4, Term 3, 2009

We had a variety of activities on offer last week at lunchtimes, as well as some class trips. The Year 11 Geography class went on their annual trip to Stan Wolland's farm for first-hand research for their Dairy Studies unit of work.
Teachers have been involved in extensive professional development this term and have visited other schools, as well as senior guidance teachers attending a Restorative Justice for Students course.

Most of our students are about to make their subject choices for next year, and staff have been advising them on the courses available. An Options Evening will be held this week, on Wednesday 19th at 7.00pm, in the College canteen. This is for students, parents and care givers to come and talk to teachers about courses for 2010.
Thursday we had sports and cultural photos which involved most students throughout the morning.
Also Thursday lunchtime the inaugural inter-house Singstar Competition was held, and proved to be a popular event.
Congratulations go to the U15 Rugby team for making their competition final.

Maths Week had the school buzzing last week. All students had the opportunity to answer the daily Maths question in order to compete for the grand prize and daily spot prizes. Two teams from Year 9 and 10 travelled to Masterton to compete in the Intersecondary Schools Mathex Competition and performed well. At School, all Year 9, 10 and 11 students took part in the Maths Week and Mathletics on-line competitions. Maths Department staff also looked very smart in their newly issued Maths Week vests.

On Wednesday at lunchtime the forum SADD (Students Against Driving Drunk) committee organized an educational obstacle course to be tackled wearing 'Fatal Goggles'. These goggles helped show students what it is like to attempt tasks and how your senses and judgement can be affected in a similar way to being drunk. It surprised many of the students who took part in it as they didn't know how difficult an easy task could become. It was a great success and was a good way for the College to promote SADD week.

Late in the third week of term our Chess team took part in the Secondary School Competition in Palmerston North. Of the eleven teams competing Tararua College finished a very creditable fourth behind the two PNBHS teams and Awatapu College.

Also on the Friday of that week a group of our Drama students and teachers travelled to Masterton to attend 'All the World's a Stage', a solo Shakespeare performance, along with other Wairarapa schools. It was an interesting look at some of Shakespeare's work performed by veteran New Zealand actor Ron Henwood. His performance gave students food for thought on both Shakespeare and dramatic performances.

Fundraising for our Inspiration Tour to Italy is well under way. On September 18th our annual Lip Sync Competition will be held and proceeds will go toward the Tour.
A major event that is fast approaching is the Aivale Cole Concert at the Regent in Palmerston North. Aivale, a winner of the Lexus Song Quest, will show her versatility when she performs in a jazz concert for us on September 20th at 3pm. She will be supported by members of the Roger Fox Big Band. Aivale will perform for us after her return from Sydney the week before singing at the Sydney Opera House and before she relocates to London to further her opera career.
Aivale has been wonderful in her support of the Inspiration Tour project, and will be donating all profits from this Charity Concert to the Italy Inspiration Tour fundraising efforts.
Tickets are now on sale, and are available from the College Office and Ticket Direct in The Regent Theatre in Palmerston North. Prices are: Reserve A: $35.00 (senior/unwaged $30), Reserve B: $25.00 (senior/unwaged $20), Students/Child: $15.00
