Tararua College Happenings, Week 4, Term 4, 2008

Another week zips by and NCEA exams are almost a reality. All senior students sitting external examinations should now have their admission slips. This is the last reminder that senior prizegiving is this Wednesday at 7.00pm in the College hall.

The last week in October focused on the national Breast Cancer Awareness appeal and culminated in a mufti day on Friday. The theme for the day was pink and Stella Usherwood was kept busy painting staff finger nails, with extra donations made by her when she talked most male staff into it. Over all, around $900 was raised during the week, a superb effort for a very worthy cause.

Last week Louise Baker, a year 13 student here at Tararua College, competed in the National NZAMD dance competitions. A dancer must be nominated to compete which was a great honour for Louise. The competitions were held in Christchurch, and Louise travelled down there in the weekend. Louise had outstanding results - she came second in the Ballet and fourth in the Contemporary Dance section. Well done Louise - a fine achievement.

On September 30th the Wairarapa Intercollegiate Solo Music Competition was held at St Matthews in Masterton. Tararua College was well represented with musicians competing in each category. Haruka Asai performed beautifully in the Piano section. Nina Christie and Jael Henderson sung superbly in the vocal competition. In the Instrumental section the College was ably represented by Daniel Collins and Sam Keall. Sam won this section with a magnificent performance of Handel's Sonata No. 4. The standard of performances was extremely high at the competition this year, so the efforts made by our students were particularly commendable.

Mrs Aldworth took our Japanese students over to Feilding last Friday. They visited the farmer's market in the morning and sampled some local produce. In the afternoon it was a guided tour of the Feilding sale yards while in action, and the day finished with a visit to Kowhai Park.

Last Tuesday evening at the College the senior Drama students held their Senior Performance and Assessment concert for parents and friends in the Drama room. There was a fantastic turnout and a wide variety of performances were enjoyed by all. Also, in the hall, the piano students of our itinerant piano teacher, Natalie Langkopf, gave their recital for family and friends.
