Tararua College Happenings, Week 5, Term 2, 2010

Last Wednesday was a very busy day with a number of staff and students out of school for the day.

All Year 10 students attended the opening of the 'Real Earth Film Festival' at the Regent on Broadway in Palmerston North, which consisted of a variety of eighteen short movies ranging in length from one to four minutes. The theme was Earth and its environmental issues, and was a very worthwhile and informative presentation. Sam Pullen was lucky enough to be one of the four students to win a spot prize on the same day.

18 students and two PE staff travelled to Foxton to take part in the Manawatu Inter-Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships. All of our students ran very well, with our Junior Boy's team coming in third. Best individual result went to Rebekah O'Hagan who came fifth in the Senior Girls division.

The rest of the week was used by the large contingent of students involved in the Stage Challenge production in putting the finishing touches to their efforts.

In week three of Term 2, the Academic Committee promoted their second subject: Art. This was done by holding a House chalk-tagging competition during lunchtime, where each House was given a rectangle (about 2.5m by 1.5m). In this shape, they were to design a tag of their House name. Kowhai got off to a firey start, designing happy yellow faces around their House name, but mistakes meant they had to cross out their rectangle and start again. Rimu's tag really looked like it belonged on a wall. The block letters were filled with the image of bricks. Totara's 'cute' sign apparently would have made kindergarten children smile, but it was Matai's amazing koru designs surrounding their House name that won the competition. Thanks to Art teacher, Mrs Lisa Purda, for giving up her time to judge the tagging competition. It was a close competition in the end, with Rimu picking up second place, and scoring bonus points for dressing up in red.

Two college Bands, Efekt and 5150, recently attended the Manawatu heats of the Smokefree Rockquest competition. There was a huge turnout of nearly forty hopeful bands, who had the opportunity to play just one of their own compositions. Both of our entrants were successful in making it through to the Regional Finals to be held on June 12th at the Regent on Broadway in Palmerston North. Congratulations and good luck for the Finals.

Our congratulations go to HOD Physical Education Jenny Searle, who last week graduated with her Masters Degree in Education, with Distinction, from Massey University. It is a tremendous achievement to have accomplished this advanced qualification while teaching full-time.

There were some excellent results in the winter sports fixtures for last weekend.
Girls' Hockey had a well deserved 3-1 win over PNGHS. Goal scorers were Alyse Jensen, with a spectacular lofted goal, Jess Wright and Rebekah O'Hagan.
Boy's Football recorded a 4-4 draw with Feilding High, with Year 12 striker Ben Cotter-Dephoff scoring a hat trick.
Our 9A Netball team had a magnificent 29-7 win over Awatapu, with Mackenzie Clince claiming the maximum three points for Player of the Day.
