TARARUA COLLEGE HAPPENINGS, WEEK 6, TERM 2, 2010 Tararua competitors in the recent Manawatu Inter-Secondary Cross-Country held at Foxton are (left to right): Richard Mudford, Rebekah O'Hagan, Greta Horne, Laura Cannon and John Beech Another full on week last week, with visits by groups of Year 8 students from our contributing schools to the College during the day, and an Open Evening for students and parents on Wednesday evening. The whole School were involved in a performance on Monday, a senior Geography trip on Tuesday and vaccinations on Wednesday; combined with our senior students preparing for an assessment week meant a busy time for everyone. On Monday we were privileged to see the 'Ugly Shakespeare' performance, very loosely based on 'Othello', it was performed by three actors who played all the parts; in places assisted by (willing) members of the audience. It was an entertaining performance enjoyed by the majority of the School. The students had the opportunity to ask the actors questions at the end, which were answered with humour also. The students were engaged with the performance, which helped make Shakespeare accessible to a modern-day audience. Tuesday saw the Year 12 Geography class head for Palmerston North to look at an urban landscape close-up, in preparation for their end-of-year examinations. The day began at the Palmerston airport where the CEO, Garry Goodman, spoke to the group about the airport and the role it plays in the city. They then moved around to look at other urban zones in the city. |
This year Tararua College entered the 'Manawatu Regional Stage Challenge Event', held at the Regent Theatre, Palmerston North, last Friday. The teacher-in-charge, Mary Mika, said of the day "86 students represented Tararua College on stage and behind the scenes. It was an amazing day for all involved, and we can successfully say that almost everyone who participated this year would love to do it again." Tararua College's theme was 'Sorry Day at Last - Treatment of Aborigines'. It focused on telling the story of the interaction of Aborigines and Australians, from first contact to current Prime Minister Kevin Rudd saying sorry to the Aborigines in 2008 for their past mistreatment. Although not receiving a placing, Tararua College was rewarded with an award of Excellence for Best Concept (storyline), and was the only school to be awarded with Excellence for Student Achievement (best student leaders). Many thanks to Mr Arends, Ester Romp, Janet Lochhead and Noeline Lochhead for their support leading up to, and during, the event. TC could not have participated without your help. Thanks also to Mr Leigh for making our set, Ms Cotter for making the nuns' habits, Miss Prentice for taking us to the venue and supporting us all day, and to Miss Searle and Matua Wi for supporting us at the venue as well. We plan to prepare early for 2011, but will keep it a secret for now, in case burning ears get wind of our idea! Highlights of the last weekend's sports was a resounding 8-1 win for the Boys' Football over Awatapu College. Ben Cotter-Dephoff scored another hat trick, his twin Sam scored 4, and Alex Tweedy the remaining goal. After their well-earned win last week, Girls' hockey was up against Nga Tawa and was held to a 2-2 draw. The opportunities to convert the deciding goal unfortunately went astray for us. The 9A Netball team had a convincing 31-6 win over PNGHS.
