Tararua College Happenings, Week 6, Term 3, 2008 We are past halfway in the term now and final external exams will be here for our senior students all too soon. There is no time to lose in putting a revision programme in place as part of exam preparations. The hard yards have been done on the sports field, and now the effort and commitment need to be directed at school work and qualifications. There are a wide range of activities and events taking place at the college at present. Our senior Food Technology students have been involved in a nation-wide trial of incorporating the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme with Food Technology. The resulting products from the companies formed have been showcased at a Trade Fair in the Palmerston North Plaza recently. Year 11 Geography are about to embark on their Dairy Farming Unit and their annual visit to Stan Wolland's farm. Last week a group of thirty Visual Art and Textiles students went to Wellington to visit the Massey University School of Design. They were given a guided tour through the Industrial, Visual Communication, Textiles, Fashion and Spatial Design Departments, seeing students at work there. After lunching in the city, it was a brisk walk to be wowed by the Fiona Hall exhibition at the City Art Gallery. It was a very worthwhile trip and opened up a world of possible art and design study options for our students. Also last week Mr Forrest took a group of our senior students to the Victoria University Open Day, and other tertiary providers in Wellington. They had a first hand look at some course options for their career path at college for next year for the Year 12s, and possible tertiary courses in 2009 for the Year 13s. Today the Interschool Agriculture Challenge is being hosted by Tararua at the Bush Multisport Stadium. There are 8 teams competing from the Tararua and Manawatu regions. We have one team entered and watch this space for a report next week. On Friday 29th of August the College will be holding a Music Concert. There will be a wide variety of musical styles showcased so there is bound to be something for everyone! Funds raised will go towards the students traveling to Australia in September. The Concert starts at 7pm. Tickets cost $10 and include supper. They will be on sale at school from August 25th and door sales will also be available. Thanks to Mrs McKay's ICT classes for designing the tickets and creating the promotional posters. Please come and support the students and have a great night out! Winter sports are drawing to a conclusion and many of our teams are involved in championship knockout games. Boys football and hockey both have their semifinal this week, while the First XV had a thrilling 25 to 22 semi-final victory last Saturday over a bolstered PNBHS 3rd XV. Good luck to our Boys and Girls hockey and netball teams heading off to their Winter Tournaments next week. For further information about this column or events at Tararua College please contact Mr. Mcknight at the College. |
