Tararua College Happenings, Week 6, Term 3, 2009 Profile of the week This week we profile Year 12 student Luke Parker. Luke is a member of the Forum and is on the Students Against Driving Drunk Committee. He also took part in the recent Senior Speech Competition and plays rugby and hockey for the College.
Name: Luke Parker Class/House: 12RD/Kowhai Home Town: Pahiatua Favourite Subject: Geography Sports and Hobbies: Rugby and hockey Aspirations: To attend university and possibly study geology. The week began with a Teacher-Only Day. Staff worked together in departments to further develop units of work and teaching approaches, and to incorporate the new Curriculum in the junior school for 2010. The Central Districts Inter-Secondary School Ag Challenge was held at The Stadium in Pahiatua on Tuesday. Tararua College had two teams competing in a variety of activities including fencing, tractor and quad driving, general knowledge, wool and stock handling and health and safety. Overall winner was Wairarapa College, with PNBHS second and Feilding High third. On Tuesday evening a group of Year 10 netball players, their coaches and netball co-coordinator Mrs. Forrest attended a netball presentation at Arena Manawatu. Our Year 10 team were presented with the Jubilee Cup for the highest goal average in all of the schools competition in Manawatu. Tararua teams have won this Cup previously in 1979 and 1984, and it was a great honour for the Year 10 team to receive this cup again in 2009. This has capped off a very successful season for the girls, and the icing on the cake could be first place in their grade which will be decided against the PNGHS 10A team. On behalf of the team, captained by Tegan Mabey and Sam Shanahan, special thanks go to their student coaches Nicola Death and Ruth de Jong for their effort throughout the season. The senior A netball team is playing Saint Peters' Development team for first place in their grade also. |

The competition was impressive with Georgia Mayer taking the Year 9 title, and Grace Watling the Year 10. A team of Year 9 and 10 students took part in the Manawatu Get to Go Challenge held in Palmerston North on Thursday. This involved kayaking, mountain-bike riding and orienteering disciplines, and on Friday a group of senior students travelled to Wellington to attend the Victoria University Open Day to check out courses for next year. This week we have three sports teams taking part in National Tournament Week. The Senior A netballers travel to Gisborne, The Boys' Hockey is held in Carterton, and Girls' Hockey is playing at Levin. We wish them well in their respective tournaments. A reminder that the annual Lip Sync Competition is being held on September 18th in the Tararua College hall.
