Tararua College Happenings, Week 7, Term 1, 2010

Last weekend our Student Forum and Year 13 students took part in the annual Relay for Life in Palmerston North to raise funds for cancer. It went for 24 hours, and during this time our team amassed 777 laps which gained them 3rd place over all for completed laps. This was a tremendous effort and was up from the total in 2009 of 665 laps. Our head boy completed the now traditional 50 successive laps; and 3 other students, A J Howse, Regan Davy and Ben Cotter-Dephoff recorded 100 plus laps each - a truly marathon effort. All participants enjoyed being a part of this very worthwhile cause.

On Monday morning, our 12 Senior Leaders, accompanied by Mr Turner, travelled to Palmerston North's Regent Theatre to attend the tenth National Young Leaders Day. The theme for the day was POTENTIAL, and the day consisted of listening to speakers based on this. Speakers included international speaker and author Allison Mooney; Pat Buckley, who is a life skills educator and motivational speaker; singer Nathan King; and budding journalist Jehan Casinader. The day was very worthwhile and our students returned buzzing and motivated to succeed, and to help others achieve their potential.

The main activity last week was the Year 9 camps. All classes, accompanied by some of their teachers, had their turn in the outdoors. This report is by Kelsi Pike-Daysh of 9WN:
On 9WN's camp we had the most enjoyable time with our peers, student support leaders and our teachers.
On the first day, one activity we participated in was climbing a wall using nothing but ourselves to push and pull each other over the wall. Everyone did so well! We learnt some survival skills from Mr Leigh and cooked our lunch over the embers, after building our own campfires. Some very brave students from our class took up the challenge of abseiling off a bridge and being dropped into the river - while the rest of us watched helplessly from the sidelines.
That night we did a lot of fun activities like the chocolate game, which included dressing up. We also played spotlight and competed in a quiz.
The next day we played games that our student support leaders organised. These were awesome games and we had such a good time!
Then it was time to go home. I think everyone was tired and couldn't wait to get home.
Overall we had an awesome time, we built co-operative skills, leadership skills, and we learnt about each other and made stronger friendships.

Recently Caron Purvis of Year 12 achieved her Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award. Over the last year and a half, Caron has taken on a range of activities that have been personally challenging, and she has completed these to a very high standard. These activities include photography, playing team sport for our football team, working as a volunteer Sunday school leader, and undertaking extensive outdoor activities and expeditions. Throughout, Caron has shown focus and determination, and can be justifiably proud of her achievements. She has now decided to start working towards her Silver Award.
