Tararua College Happenings, Week 8, Term 1, 2010 The final countdown to the 50th Jubilee celebrations at Easter is on, and there is still much work going on in the background as preparations notch up a gear. Photo-boards have been created and are themed around school classes, ball photos, productions, sports and cultural events. Souvenirs are on sale throughout the celebrations and include coffee mugs, beer and wine glasses, pens and carry bags - all of which are suitably marked for the occasion. There are around 600 registrations and it looks like being a wonderful weekend. The College is open on Easter Friday afternoon when registration packs will be able to be picked up from the hall. Year 9 classes are all back now from their very successful camps. Last Tuesday evening we held a very well attended and successful senior Report Evening for parents and caregivers. Trips are planned for the Year 12 Biology Class to go on their annual field trip to Riversdale beach and a trip to Massey University for those Maori students wishing to carry on to tertiary education is also about to take place. Preparations for the regional Stage Challenge competition are well under way, and the sets are beginning to take shape. Groups have been practicing their respective scenes with enthusiasm, and when costumes are finalized the make-up and costume team will swing in to action. Two of our year 11 students, Kathryn Pound and Ben Blackwell, have been delivering some outstanding performances in national and regional swimming competitions of late. At the Division II National Championships Ben won the 1500m freestyle event, shaving a massive 13 seconds off his personal best time. Kathryn made all her finals, coming 2nd in the 50m backstroke and 3rd in 100m butterfly. At the Wairarapa Inter-Schools meet, Ben placed 1st in the 50m Back stroke and Kathryn won both the 50m butterfly and 100m freestyle, both in personal best times. Both of these outstanding swimmers aim to qualify for the Short Course National Championships held in Christchurch in September. |
Successful Year 11 swimming duo of Kathryn Pound and Ben Blackwell The summer sports are coming to an end, and our Boys and Girls Cricket Teams have had a very pleasing, but rain affected, season. Stand-out players for the girls were Kathryn Pound and Anna Arends, while the boys were ably lead by Chris Luoni and well supported by Sam Boyden and Mark Field. Of course, winter codes seem to take over fairly quickly, and most teams have held their preliminary training sessions and trials For further information on this column or about Tararua College events, including our 50th Jubilee at Easter, please contact the School office, email Mr. Mcknight at the College. |
