TARARUA COLLEGE HAPPENINGS, WEEK 8, TERM 2, 2010

Following on from the Queen’s Birthday Weekend holiday it was a hectic four day week, with staff putting the finishing touches to the full school’s mid year progress reports. These will be posted out in the last week of term.

Music students were also polishing their performances for their fast approaching central North Island tour.

SADD (Students Against Driving Drunk) is an organisation who provide students with the best prevention tools possible to deal with the issues of underage drinking and driving impaired and other destructive decisions. Last Wednesday our SADD committee members were dressed all in white during the day. They had to go the whole day without talking and acted as if to represent the spirits of those who had lost their lives to drink driving.

Last week the whole school went to the hall to listen to the message of anti violence campaigner, Vic Tamati.

There was also a visit from the first of the University Liaison officers from Otago to talk to our seniors heading off for further study.

A former student, Daniel Jaques (2003-2007) now studying at the School of Management at Waikato University, was part of a team that won a strategic case competition, where a scenario was given and teams had to develop strategies to meet this.

There were no secondary school sports over the long weekend.
Boys’ Hockey played the previous Thursday and had a fine 2 – 2 draw with St Peter's College, with Troy Davey scoring both goals.
Our only team to have played last week was the Girls’ Hockey team who had a tough game against Horowhenua College from Levin. Team member Gemma Lockhead says the girls are hoping to “kick up their game a notch” before facing Newlands College this week. This is a major exchange involving most of our winter sports codes and is being hosted here this Tuesday, starting at 10.30.

Year 11 student Kathryn Pound is a member of the 26 strong Manawatu swimming team to take part in the 6 Region meet at Freyberg Community pool in Palmerston North on June 27th. Kathryn will be competing in the 100m Butterfly and Freestyle as well as the 200m Freestyle events.

Board of Trustee’s Elections have been held recently and we welcome our new and returning BOT members. Ann Beech (Chair), Claire Matthews, Nikki Harding (Staff rep), Stephany Walker (Student rep) and new members Michael Pound and Bridget Percy. We are currently in the process of looking to select another parent representative.

Our school web site has recently been reviewed and has a new look. School Bulletins and our newspaper articles can be found under the “What’s Happening” menu. Please visit the site and have look around. Any feed back would be appreciated.
