Tararua College Happenings, Week 9, Term 2, 2010

The Manawatu regional Finals of the Smokefree RockQuest were held at the Regent on Broadway in Palmerston North last weekend. Tararua had two bands make the finals. 5150 took out a very creditable 3rd place and Efekt were picked as the only band to receive a days recording voucher at The Stomach studios in Palmerston North. Congratulations to members of both bands who were fine ambassadors for our school at the competition.

For the last couple of weeks, the 10HD English class and their teacher Mrs Forrest, have been working on their English Formal Writing Unit, and have centred their essay writing on the “Violence Free” theme as outlined by Vic Tamati in assembly the previous week. They all entered the essay writing competition, which was run by the Tararua Family Violence Awareness group, in conjunction with Vic Tamati’s presentations, with categories for students as well as adults. On Tuesday evening, all 10HD students, accompanied by Mrs Forrest and Mrs Harding, attended the presentation in Dannevirke. Entered in the South Tararua region, our students took out all of the major prizes.
First was Morgan Beugelsdyk who won a laptop, second was Ella O’Toole winning a $600 Dick Smith voucher and Hannah Field won a digital camera for third place. The adult section was won by Mrs Harding who also won a laptop. Well done to all involved.

The INZONE Careers bus was in the school on Tuesday. It consisted of interactive, themed displays where students could enter their personal details and look at suitable career paths.

The Newlands sports exchange was also on Tuesday. Conditions for outdoor games were cold and bleak, and all of our teams put up very good displays against very strong opposition. Our Girls’ Hockey team had a good win 3 – 0 with goals to Jemma Lochhead, Alyse Jensen and Deana Collis. Boys’ Hockey played well losing 2 – 1 and our Netball A team lost by only four goals. The hot afternoon tea was appreciated by all involved.

Assembly on Wednesday featured the Jazz Band with a final performance before they head off on their tour of the Central North Island this week. Also a number of merit reward vouchers were presented to those students who had gathered 25 or more merit points so far this year. Well done to those students.

Highlight of the last weekend's sport was all of our netball teams recording wins. 10 A beat Awatapu Junior A 17 – 11, and Senior A beat Freyberg A2 23 – 16. The year 9 team looks promising as a possible grade winner this week, beating Freyberg 10 A2 21 – 11.
Girls’ Football had a very pleasing 2 – 0 win over a Dannevirke womens' team, with goals to Morgan Brinfield and Stephany Walker.
Boys’ Football had a good 4 – 3 win over Manawatu College at Foxton last weekend, with Alex Tweedy scoring twice.
Last Thursday, the Boys’ Hockey team beat Freyberg 1st XI 2 – 1 with goals to Simon McCool and Troy Davey. The Girls’ Hockey mid week game was a nil all draw with Feilding High.
