Tararua College Happenings, Week 9, Term 3, 2008

Spring fever week is upon us and fun activities are underway. From 'Farmer Brown' Day where everyone gets dressed in their favourite farming attire to 'Fear Factor Day - obviously fear is not a factor for you!

The Waharoa is taking shape at the entranceway to the Marae and will soon be completed. Plans are underway for the upgrade of both A and B blocks.

Last week 30 of our junior students attended the 'Step Up' program with over 500 other students from the Manawatu region. The purpose was to educate and excite teenagers about the possibilities for their future in life and business. The teens were split into groups of eight and each were headed by a coach who is themself a successful person and lead the group following the speakers' themes. Our students gained an enormous amount from the two day workshop, taking away many strategies and skills they can apply to their own lives.

On Wednesday 10th September our six Japanese students, accompanied by Teacher Aides Ivy Mary Gleeson and Val Wallace, spent a day in Palmerston North. They explored the Sea Chest Mystery Exhibition at Te Manawa Museum Gallery and Science Centre, swam at the Lido, walked in the Esplanade and shopped! An enjoyable days outing for everyone.

The Chemistry Department has been given a grant from the Manawatu branch of the NZ Institute of Chemistry for the purchase of a digital camera and accessories. This will be primarily used to add a series of images to the online Chemistry course on the WeLCom website: www.welcom.net.nz. Mr Forster gratefully acknowledges the ongoing assistance from the NZIC for the teaching of Chemistry at Tararua College.

A group of our junior students attended Tewhakamana Taitamaiki Junior Maori Career Awareness Day in Palmerston North last week. They learned about goal setting, barriers to achieving your goals and taking a step from where you're at to follow your dreams. Our students offered great ideas and did themselves and their School and their whanau proud. At the end of the day, a prize for being the most enthusiastic and involved person was awarded to Sheridan Young. Tumeke e Sheridan!

A very successful winter sporting season is drawing to a close. Boys Hockey won their final knockout game last week by convincingly beating Feilding High 8-2. Our Girls B Hockey played in their final knockout game and were defeated 5-4 by Taihape Area School, finishing 2nd in their grade. There was an exceptional win by the Girls 1st XI hockey in their last competition game, winning 5-0 against Awatapu for 3rd place in their grade. Girls football drew their final game against Dannevirke 0-0 to finish 3rd in their grade. Boys 1st XI football won their last league game 11-2 against Dannevirke and now only have the final knockout game to play against PNBHS.
