LEADERSHIP AND SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES Developing leadership skills is another way Tararua College provides direction for the future. All students from Years 9 to 13 are encouraged to participate and assume various leadership roles. Some of the roles include:
Young New Zealanders' Challenge: This became well known as the Duke of Edinburgh Awards. It is a balanced, progressive programme of extra-curricular activities for young people between the ages of 14 and 25. There are three levels to the Challenge Programme - Bronze, Silver and Gold. Bronze: Minimum starting age 14 and over - minimum commitment of 6 months. Earliest finishing age 14 1/2. Silver: Minimum starting age 15 and over - minimum commitment of 6 months (12 months for direct entrants*). Gold: Minimum starting age 16 and over - minimum commitment of 12 months (18 months for direct entrants*). (*direct entrant is a participant who has not completed the previous Award). |
Each level has four Sections:
Since 1963 almost 60,000 young people in New Zealand have achieved Bronze, Silver or Gold Awards, while many more have completed one or more section certificates. Approximately 5,000 young people take up the Programme each year. Over 300 schools and colleges offer the Programme for their students. A further 500 community groups offer their young people access to the Programme. The Programme is internationally recognised and operated in over 100 countries worldwide. Mr T Swale is the Co-ordinator for this Award at the College
