Te Whare Tapa Rima - The five-sided home

“We aim to instil, within our students, the knowledge of Respect, Active Involvement, and the pursuit of Excellence in a safe and flexible environment”
Ko te pae tawhiti Whāia kia tata, Ko te pae tata Whakamaua kia tina  Seek out the distant horizons, While cherishing Those achievements at hand.

The learner support model combines Mason Durie's original Whare Tapa Whā model, and Moeau's addition of 'Taha whenua', to become the Whare Tapa Rima. This model supports understandings of human well-being by representing a whare/home. A whare has five dimensions when viewed from the front, the foundation, two walls and the two pitched sides of the roof. At Taraua College we believe that each of the 5 dimensions are linked, and our young people need support in all areas to achieve to their potential. We look at each of the dimensions as the following:

Taha Whenua

Cultural belonging & Connection

  • Belonging
  • Foundation
  • Connection to land/school
  • Life source (natural environment)
  • Diverse cultures
Taha Whānau

  • Everyone has a place

Taha Tinana

  • Nourishing food for your body
Taha Wairua

Spiritual well-being

  • Who you are
  • What you believe
  • Where you belong
  • where you are going
Taha Hinengaro

Mental & Emotional well-being

  • Mind and heart
  • Conscience - thoughts and feelings
  • Communication
